P0442 — EVAP System Leak Detected (Small Leak)
What P0442 Means
Your car's computer tested the EVAP system — the sealed network of hoses and valves that traps gasoline vapors from your fuel tank so they don't escape into the air — and found a small leak. And I mean small: on most vehicles this test can flag a hole around a millimeter across, sometimes less. That's why this code drives people crazy trying to find it by eye.
Common Symptoms
- Check engine light. For most folks, that's the whole show.
- Sometimes a faint gasoline smell around the car, especially after a fill-up or on a hot day.
- No change in how the car starts, idles, or drives — that's normal for this code.
- A failed emissions test or inspection, if your state requires one.
If your engine is running rough or stalling, something else is going on. P0442 by itself doesn't do that.
Most Likely Causes, Ranked the Way I Actually Check Them
- Gas cap. Loose, worn-out seal, or a cheap no-name replacement that never sealed right. First thing I check on every EVAP code, and the cheapest fix on this list. Think back — did the light come on a day or two after you got gas?
- Cracked or dry-rotted EVAP hoses. The rubber lines under the hood and along the tank bake in the heat until they split. Down here in Florida, the sun does half my diagnostic work for me.
- Purge valve (purge solenoid) not sealing. It's supposed to close tight; when it doesn't, the system can't hold pressure during the self-test and sets a leak code.
- Vent valve or solenoid sticking. Same idea on the other end of the system, usually back by the charcoal canister. Dirt and corrosion love this valve.
- Rusty or damaged filler neck. The metal tube your gas cap screws onto corrodes right where the seal rides. Big one on older trucks and anything that spent years up north.
- Cracked charcoal canister. The plastic canister that stores the vapors can crack, especially if it caught road debris.
- Fuel tank pressure sensor or leak-detection pump acting up. Least common. I don't condemn these parts until I've smoked the whole system and found nothing.
What I Check First in the Shop
First thing I do is spin the gas cap off and look at the seal — if it's cracked, flattened, or it's some gas-station replacement cap, that's suspect number one. Then I pull the freeze-frame data to see the conditions when the code set: fuel level, temperature, how long the car had been running. That tells me whether the test even ran under fair conditions. If the cap checks out, I hook up the smoke machine, feed low-pressure smoke into the EVAP system, and just watch. Wherever the smoke sneaks out, that's your leak. No guessing, no throwing parts at it.
Can You Keep Driving?
Yes. P0442 is an emissions code, not a mechanical one — your engine isn't in danger and the car is safe to drive. Two honest caveats: you're letting raw fuel vapor escape (that's wasted gas, and stopping it is the whole point of this system), and a check engine light that stays on can hide a newer, more serious code behind it. You also won't pass an emissions test with it lit. If you ever smell strong raw gasoline, that's beyond "small leak" territory — get it looked at soon.
Rough Cost: DIY vs. Shop
- DIY: A quality gas cap runs about $10–25. EVAP hose is cheap. A purge valve is usually $20–60 for the part, and on a lot of vehicles it's two bolts and one connector.
- Shop: EVAP diagnosis with a smoke test typically lands somewhere around $75–150 depending on your area. Simple repairs — cap, hose, purge or vent valve — usually come in around $100–300 all-in. A charcoal canister or filler neck replacement can run more like $200–600+ with labor, depending on the vehicle.
Those are honest ballparks, not promises. Prices swing a lot by vehicle and region.
