P0420 — Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

What P0420 means

In plain English: your car's computer thinks the catalytic converter on bank 1 (the side with cylinder #1) isn't cleaning the exhaust the way it should. That's it. It does NOT automatically mean you need a new cat — it means the sensors watching the cat don't like what they're seeing, and there's more than one reason that can happen.

Common symptoms

Most of the time, the only symptom is the check engine light. That's what makes this code sneaky — the car usually drives just fine. But sometimes you'll notice:

Most likely causes, in the order I actually check them

  1. Exhaust leak. A cracked flex pipe, a blown gasket, or a rusted weld anywhere between the engine and the rear O2 sensor lets fresh air in and throws off the readings. Cheapest fix on this whole list, and I find them all the time.
  2. A lazy downstream O2 sensor. The sensor behind the cat is the one grading the cat's homework. If it's old and slow, it can flunk a converter that's actually fine.
  3. Something upstream killing the cat. Misfires, running rich or lean, burning oil or coolant. If there are other codes stored — misfire codes, fuel trim codes — those get fixed FIRST. Put a new cat on a car that's still misfiring and you'll be buying another one.
  4. The converter is genuinely worn out. On a higher-mileage car with no leaks, no other codes, and clean fuel trims, this is usually where we end up. Cats don't last forever, and this is the most common final answer — it's just never the first thing I assume.
  5. A cheap aftermarket cat that never really worked. If somebody already put a bargain-bin converter on this car, some of those barely pass the sensor's test brand new.

What I check first in the shop

Before I touch a wrench, I pull the freeze frame and look at what the car was doing when the code set — coolant temp, load, fuel trims. Then I watch both O2 sensors live. On a healthy cat, the front sensor bounces around and the rear one stays fairly steady. If the rear sensor is copying the front one, the cat isn't storing oxygen anymore. After that the car goes up on the lift and I hunt for exhaust leaks with my ears and a flashlight before anybody in the building says the word "converter."

Can you keep driving?

Honestly? Usually, yes. P0420 by itself won't leave you stranded, and in most cases it isn't hurting the engine. Two real cautions, though: you won't pass an emissions test in states that require one, and if the root cause is a misfire or a rich condition, that WILL finish off the converter over time. Also, with the light already on, you won't know if a new, more serious code pops up behind it. So drive it — but don't shelf it for a year.

I'm giving broad ranges because this varies a ton from car to car:

One piece of advice from the bays: with cats, cheap is expensive. The bargain converters carry less precious metal inside, and plenty of them come back to me with the same code.
