What P0340 Means

Your engine computer isn't getting a usable signal from the camshaft position sensor — the small sensor that tells the computer exactly where the camshaft is so it can time fuel and spark correctly.

Common Symptoms

Some vehicles run almost normal with this code because the computer falls back on the crankshaft sensor. Others will strand you in a parking lot. It depends on the car, which is why I never tell someone over the phone "oh, that's nothing."

Most Likely Causes, Ranked the Way I Actually Check Them

  1. Connector and wiring problems. Corroded pins, oil that wicked up into the connector, a harness rubbed through, or wires chewed by critters. This is the cheapest thing on the list and I find it constantly — Florida humidity is hard on connectors.
  2. The cam sensor itself. This is the part that most often actually fixes a P0340. Heat and vibration kill them, and on a lot of engines they die slowly — work cold, drop out hot.
  3. Oil contamination. A seeping valve cover gasket lets oil run right down into the sensor and its plug. If I find oil in the connector, replacing the sensor without fixing the leak just buys you a repeat visit.
  4. Timing chain or belt problems. A stretched chain or a belt that jumped a tooth throws off cam-to-crank correlation. More common on higher-mileage engines, and it usually shows up with other codes or a rattle.
  5. Damaged reluctor (tone) wheel. The toothed wheel the sensor reads can get damaged. Not common, but it happens.
  6. The computer (PCM). Genuinely rare. Don't let anyone sell you a computer until everything upstream has been checked.

What I Check First in the Shop

First thing I do is pull the cam sensor connector and look inside it — green crust, engine oil, or a pushed-out pin, before I touch anything else. Then I look at the freeze frame: was the engine hot or cold, idling or on the highway when the code set? That tells me a lot about whether I'm chasing a heat-soaked sensor or a chafed wire. From there I wiggle-test the harness while watching live data, and if I need to, I scope the cam and crank signals together. I've fixed plenty of these with ten minutes of wiring work instead of a new part.

Can You Keep Driving?

Short local trips, usually yes — but understand the risk: this is a code that can leave you stranded, because a car that stalls or won't restart doesn't care where you are. If it's starting harder or stalling more often, that's your warning. And if your engine has a lot of miles and a cold-start rattle, get the timing checked before piling on more — on an interference engine, a jumped chain or belt can mean bent valves.
