What P0301 Means

Your engine's computer caught cylinder 1 misfiring — that cylinder isn't burning its air-fuel mix the way it should, either once in a while or constantly.

Common Symptoms

Sometimes you won't feel anything at all. The computer catches misfires long before your seat of the pants does.

Most Likely Causes, Ranked the Way I Actually Check Them

  1. Worn or fouled spark plug. The most common cause I see, especially on cars overdue for plugs. Cheapest part on this list, so it's where you start.
  2. Bad ignition coil. Most modern engines have one coil per cylinder, sitting right on top of the plug. They fail all the time — heat kills them. Easy test: swap it with a coil from another cylinder and see if the misfire follows.
  3. Plug wires or coil boots. On older vehicles, cracked insulation lets the spark leak out before it ever reaches the plug.
  4. Weak, clogged, or dead fuel injector. Less common than ignition parts, but it happens, especially with bad gas or high miles.
  5. Vacuum leak near cylinder 1. A torn intake gasket or cracked hose can lean out just that one cylinder.
  6. Low compression. Burnt valve, worn rings, blown head gasket, wiped cam lobe. This is the one nobody wants, and it's why I test before I recommend big-ticket parts.
  7. Carbon buildup on the intake valves. Mostly a direct-injection engine issue. Usually shows up as cold-start misfires that smooth out once the engine warms up.

What I Check First in the Shop

First thing I do is pull the coil and plug off cylinder 1 and read that plug — oil-fouled, gas-fouled, worn electrode, cracked porcelain, each one tells its own story. Then I swap that coil onto another cylinder, clear the code, and drive it. If the misfire moves with the coil, we're done — it was the coil. If it stays on cylinder 1 with a fresh plug in there, I look at the injector, and if that checks out, it's compression test time. Fifteen minutes of testing beats throwing parts at it, every single time.

Can You Keep Driving?

Depends on the light. If the check engine light is steady, you have some breathing room — drive easy, skip the hard acceleration and heavy loads, and get it looked at soon. If the light is flashing, that means raw fuel is going into the exhaust, and unburned fuel overheats and destroys catalytic converters. A misfire that would've cost you a plug and a coil can turn into a converter job costing many times more. Flashing light: drive it gently and only as far as you have to.
