P0011 — Camshaft Position Timing Over-Advanced (Bank 1)

I've been a mechanic here in Florida for 25 years, and P0011 comes through my bay all the time — Nissans, Toyotas, GM four-cylinders, Subarus, you name it. Here's the straight story, no upsell.

What this code means

Your engine computer commanded the intake camshaft on bank 1 to a certain position, and the cam is running further ahead (advanced) than it should — the variable valve timing (VVT) system over-advanced it and can't pull it back in line.

Common symptoms

Sometimes the check engine light is the only thing you'll notice. When it gets worse, you might see:

Most likely causes, ranked the way I actually check them

Cheapest and most common first — this is the order I work through in the shop:

  1. Low, old, or wrong oil. The VVT system runs on engine oil pressure. Low level, sludge from stretched oil-change intervals, or the wrong viscosity will trip this code. I've cleared more P0011s with an oil change than with any part I've ever sold. Check your dipstick before you spend a dime.
  2. Stuck or dirty VVT solenoid (oil control valve). This little valve meters oil to the cam phaser. They stick from varnish, and the filter screen on the tip clogs up. Cheap part, usually easy to reach.
  3. Wiring or connector at the solenoid. Corroded pins, a chafed wire, a connector knocked loose during some other repair. Costs nothing to check.
  4. Worn or sludged cam phaser (the actuator on the end of the camshaft). If oil and solenoid check out, the phaser itself can be stuck or worn. More labor here.
  5. Stretched timing chain or jumped timing. Usually higher-mileage engines that lived on late oil changes. This is the expensive one, and it's the last thing I condemn without proof.
  6. Rarely: cam sensor or the computer itself. Possible, but I don't guess at these until everything above checks good.

What I check first in the shop

Honest truth: the first tool I grab is the dipstick. Level and condition — if the oil's a quart low and black as roofing tar, that's suspect number one, and I've watched this code disappear with nothing but fresh oil and a filter. If the oil looks right, I pull the freeze-frame data to see the conditions when the code set, then watch commanded versus actual cam timing live on the scan tool while I cycle the VVT solenoid. If the cam won't follow the command, that solenoid comes out — and more often than not, the screen on the end of it tells the story.

Can you keep driving?

Short trips, yes — this usually isn't a tow-the-car code. But don't sit on it. The same dirty oil that sets P0011 is also chewing on your phaser and timing chain, and those repairs cost real money. If the engine is rattling, stalling, or the oil pressure light is on too, park it and get it looked at now.
